3 things to ponder

1. Cows
2. The Constitution
3. The Ten Commandments

Cows -
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that our government can track a single cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washington? And they track her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

The Constitution -
They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we're not using it anymore.

The Ten Commandments -

The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this: You
cannot post "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery", and "Thou Shalt Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment

That's all.

I don't like to ponder too long.

It makes me nervous.

Straight outta Left Field

You remember those silly facts under Snapple caps? Oh there still around! There was one that got me thinking; “The average person sits in traffic for 2 years of his/her life!” we are also asleep for 1/3 of our life considering that there’s 24 hours in a day and on average you sleep for 8 hours.
Gosh that means that when you hit 30 you’ve been sleeping for 10 years! And that’s if you’re sleeping ONLY 8 hours a night :)
Then there are times when you’re awake but you’re not doing anything so you’re kinda sleeping.
Every month I spend two days or more on the train that means that in a year I’m on the train for 1 month or 576 hours awake, but doing nothing. So when they say that ‘life is so short’ I think it means that throughout our day-to-day activity or lack there of these minutes hours months and years are being counted up as being part of our active life.
Back to the numbers by the time you’re 50 you spent 1 year in traffic, 3 years just getting to work, approx. 6,000 hours eating breakfast, 7,500 hours in the shower, been sleeping for 15 years! So with all those numbers put together this person is only active for about 32.365 years.

Just a thought.

Albert Einstein: Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.

From the pen of my sneaker

Dear diary, 10/7/06
Let me tell you a bit about myself. I was born a few hours ago in this factory. My friend, Skitch, said that he overheard some of the workers saying that we were going to get “shipped” to a “store” to get “bought” by “people”. “Did he mean humans?”, I asked. “I think so,” he answered. The humans are coming to take us now, ’bye.

Dusty

Dear diary, 10/11/06
Boy, was that a long trip! I’ve been sitting in this storeroom for 3 days now.2 days ago was the first time I got ‘Tried’. I was just sitting in my box, minding my own business, when suddenly one of the humans who work here came in. He looked around for a few moments, then saw me and brought me into ‘The Room’. I had heard tales about ‘The Room’ from some of the shoes that had come in an earlier shipment. “H’its where ‘umans try yew on and h’if yer nice ‘n cozy they (the ‘umans) might jest take yew to those big boxes that they live in and keep yew.”, said a pair of Oxfords in a severe, cockney accent.
The human took me to a medium-sized boy human with blond hair and blue eyes. He took me and put me onto the boy’s foot. We walked around the room for a few minutes. It was a wonderful feeling. Then I heard the human say ‘nope, not these.’ And I felt my spirits plummet. Since then, I’ve been ‘Tried’ 5 times, but none were as exciting as the 1st . More soon, ‘bye

Off The Topic...

This should be required viewing for every charedi bochur/yungerman from Lubavitch to Lakewood and everything in between. I hope they're using every second in yeshiva/kolel doing what they tell the world they're doing. If not, they've got some 'splaining to do.

Just a thought...

So I've been davening with Levi at the 7th & 8th Grade Minyan for the last few weeks. Besides myself, Rabbis Shanowitz & Simpson are the only adults in the room. Before davening, Rabbi Shanowitz always says the 'Hayom Yom'. So I'm wondering if any kids actually listen to what's been said, or are they conditioned to switch off while Rebbi babbles on. Today I got my answer. I don't think they listen to a word. Rabbi Shanowitz read and translated today's Hayom Yom and not a kid batted an eyelid. Check it out here. He even explained the footnote. (Huh?!)

This weeks thoughts

Communicating or Sending Signals

One of the skills that are central to human function is the ability to communicate. Jewish sources define the human being as “the speaker”. It is the fact that we can communicate that puts us in a separate class. Speaking and the ability to express ourselves adequately, is what distinguish us from the rest of the planet.

This is somewhat puzzling, as we know that animals too can communicate with each other. The Talmud tells us that King Solomon understood the language of the animal kingdom. Science has also confirmed that there is a form of communication that exists in the animal world. So why choose communication as the hallmark of humans?

There is a fundamental difference between human and animal communication. When animals communicate, they transmit signals. Animals issue status reports that identify the state of their world. They will broadcast signals that say “here I am” or “I am about to attack”. Their communication is all about the communicator and nothing to do with the listener. The animal does not consider the world of the listener. The content and tone of the communication is not modified to be more effective, and the transmitted signal will not be sensitive to the needs and the feelings of other animals. The animal reports on its situation – the listener is irrelevant.

Human beings have the ability to go beyond transmitting signals. Humans can use communication to form relationships with other people. When we speak to others we possess the ability to enter their world, to understand them and to relate to their needs. The purpose of human expression is not to send status reports. The function of our communication is to be less absorbed in our own existence and relate more to the world of the listener. We express ourselves in a way that the other person feels that we have understood them, empathized with them and have been sensitive to how they feel.

But this takes effort. Have you ever been in with a group of people where one person talks incessantly, completely oblivious to his/her surroundings ignoring the response of those that are talking to? They are not talking to others – they are merely imposing their world on the group. We are all at risk of sometimes slipping away from human communication, into animal signal sending.

So let’s take a step back and listen to ourselves. When we talk to other people do we understand them? Have we listened to them first so that we can relate to them and talk to their world? Are we just saying whatever is on our mind or are we making sure that we are properly understood? Are we venting or are we exploring ways for the message to be heard and effective? Are we sending signals or are we communicating? When we communicate we reveal the true soul of humanity.

Purim UPDATED with new PICS

We celebrated the first night of Purim this year a little differently. Instead of attending a big bash we, along with 3 other families (The Topols, Lazaroffs and Blums {Yes Esti, Mendel Blum's brother}) had our own little Purim bash in our home. Boaz Topol lained the Megillah. We hired a magician for the kids (and adults) and a fun time was had by all. Pictures can be viewed here.

UPDATE. More pics from Purim day here

Asterix comics

After spending a very pleasant (and I must say delicious) shabbos meal with the Gouraries of Crown Heights, it came to light that the Asterixes were NOT as previously requested by a few members of this blog left to reside at 35 Observatory, but are in fact at 1101 Lincoln Place. Hmmmm....
When questioned, Avremi did in fact admit that he found them in MY room, which further proves my point that these are not the originals of Asterix-Tintin fame....
Meanwhile, we wish Levi, Yocheved ,Yehuda, Avremi and Dini many happy hours of reading :-)
(Avremi is just lucky that my kids don´t understand English....)
PS--Big Kudos go to Avremi and Dini:Thanks for always being ready to host us out-of-towners at the drop of a hat, we are really grateful for your hospitality!

Stan & Pete

Stan of "Stan & Pete" puts out a wonderful weekly newsletter in SA. I met him at the Feinblum Wedding. He posted a pic of me on his website (above) and wrote the following.

Last week was the Feinblum / Finkel wedding, which was the night after Miracle Drive, which was ‘Tukka’ a miracle……….and the Lubavitch spirit was like ‘Amollikke Yoren’ and Avremi Gourarie, helped with a few songs, and the Marathan Man (Johnny Birin) was awesome…Avremi is the son of Rabbi and Mrs Winnie Gourarie, Nephew of Rabbi Kurstag & Mrs Batya Kurstag…..(Rosh Beth –Din)….he does a fortune of work in New York, dealing only in religious music, and I remember him from days gone by…….The Kallah’s father Mark feinblum, is of course the Man from Moishies butchery in the Shtetl (Glenhazel)…and hails from Pretoria where his parents still stay………his Late Father In Law, Jackie Drutman was well known to me, and we did a lot of business together……….and in fact Stan & Pete bought the Kosher butcher from him (Hadar’s) and Moishies is what is left of it……..Yislaaaaaaaaaaaik, that was a long time ago……The wedding had tremendous Yiddisher ‘chain’ (spirit)……..

Memories.....
